How to Succeed in Business
One of the most important things that you are going to have to decide on if you are running a business is to consult where you are going to locate it. A lot of people who are just starting out try to save money by choosing an area with cheap rents. This is often a mistake, there is a reason that buildings in desirable locations cost more to lease. A good location can be the difference between success and failure. Choosing a location on price alone rarely works out well.
When choosing a location for your business the decisions that you are going to have to make are going to depend on how flexible you are regarding location. In most cases when people start a business they will start it in their hometown. In most cases this is fine but there may be advantages to moving to another city, state or even country. Things like regulations, taxes and the strength of the local economy are going to have a huge impact on the profitability of your business. These things can vary dramatically from one place to another so they may be relevant factors when it comes to deciding where to locate your business.
The next thing that you are going to want to consider is what kind of business you are running and what kind of businesses are located nearby. You wouldn't put a clothing boutique in the middle of an industrial park after all. In large part there will be zoning issues that will restrict certain businesses to certain areas of the city so that is something that you are going to need to look into. However you will need to look at things beyond just compliance with the local zoning laws. You may not want to be located across the street from a competitor, or you may choose a location specifically because it is next door to your largest competitor. The choice that you make will depend on the type of business that you are running.
You are also going to want to think about things like how easy is it to get to your business location. If you are running retail business you are going to want to be located in a highly visible location that is easily accessible by your customers. Even if you aren't running a retail business accessibility is going to be an issue. After all your employees will need to get there, if it is located in an area that is difficult to reach you may have a hard time finding people to work for you. Things like how much parking is available and whether or not the location is on a transit route are likely going to be important factors as well. In general the more accessible a location the more it is going to cost. However it is almost always worth the extra expense because of all the disadvantages of being in an area that is difficult to reach.
